Multisensory Integration: A Functional Role for Inter-Area Synchronization?
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been suggested that synchronization of neural activity in distinct areas of the brain is important in the 'perceptual binding' of the various features relating to a specific object. A recent study has provided new evidence that inter-area synchronization is important in multisensory integration.

Directed Interactions Between Auditory and Superior Temporal Cortices and their Role in Sensory Integration
Recent studies using functional imaging and electrophysiology demonstrate that processes related to sensory integration are not restricted to higher association cortices but already occur in early sensory cortices, such as primary auditory cortex. While anatomical studies suggest the superior temporal sulcus (STS) as likely source of visual input to auditory cortex, little evidence exists to su...

Our understanding of multisensory integration has advanced because of recent functional neuroimaging studies of three areas in human lateral occipito-temporal cortex: superior temporal sulcus, area LO and area MT (V5). Superior temporal sulcus is activated strongly in response to meaningful auditory and visual stimuli, but responses to tactile stimuli have not been well studied. Area LO shows s...

The integration of sensory signals from different modalities requires flexible interaction of remote brain areas. One candidate mechanism to establish local and long-range communication in the brain is transient synchronization of neural assemblies. In addition to the analysis of oscillatory power, assessment of the phase dynamics of multiple brain signals is a promising avenue to examine the i...

Although multisensory integration has been an important area of recent research, most studies focused on audiovisual integration. Importantly, however, the combination of audition and touch can guide our behavior as effectively which we studied here using psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We tested whether task-irrelevant tactile stimuli would enhance auditory dete...
متن کاملDo cross-modal projections always result in multisensory integration?
Convergence of afferents from different sensory modalities has generally been thought to produce bimodal (and trimodal) neurons (i.e., exhibit suprathreshold excitation to more than 1 sensory modality). Consequently, studies identifying cross-modal connections assume that such convergence results in bimodal (or trimodal) neurons that produce familiar forms of multisensory integration: response ...
